The original 1960s cafeteria configuration at Jasper Place School suffered from poor customer circulation, an inefficient transaction process, and security gaps that brought it out of step with the demands on the food service program at the school. As part of an extensive renovation, N53 sought to address these limitations and improve the atmosphere of the space by designing a new service line with warmth and design interest that would be reminiscent of a contemporary café.
The new design features an impressive 20m long bulkhead that effectively organizes the corresponding counter and equipment below into two circulation queues needed for streamlined operation during peak service periods. Architecturally, the service line is designed to be read as an insertion in the cafeteria, as its form and materials are self-referential and unique in the space. Despite housing a network of plumbing and electrical services, the new millwork is not visibly in contact with any walls or columns in the cafeteria, which enhances its distinction as a unique and separate element. Practically, the chevron configuration of the service line provides ample space for staff circulation behind the counter and at the doors to the commercial kitchen while tapering at either side to imply access for authorized personnel only. A grid of wall tile further demarcates the service area with a unifying gesture and foregrounds the service line to highlight it as the focal point in the cafeteria.
