In 2015, N53 Architecture was engaged by Eaglemont Christian Church to provide schematic design services for a future addition to the Church’s building in Beaumont, Alberta. The addition would double the size of an existing building from 2005, providing a new dedicated auditorium for services and events, a café and fellowship space, and additional classrooms for the church’s out of school care program. In addition to expanded programming, the Church desired a striking and unique addition to its existing building that would signify its presence in the surrounding neighbourhood and City of Beaumont as a whole.
To highlight the auditorium entrance as the focal point for the building and express Beaumont’s Franco-Albertan cultural heritage and architectural character, N53 reinterpreted a traditional French mansard roofline with tessellated phenolic tiles and a geometric upturned corner. This design gesture reimagines a traditional French architectural feature in a thoroughly modern deployment, both upholding the City’s Design Guidelines and the Church’s desire for a building with exemplary design value. The exterior colour palette evokes the changing colours of foliage during fall in the Laurentian Mountains and lends the building exterior a burst of warmth through the prairie winters.
This palette continues inside the building, with gold, orange, and light-toned wood accenting the interior spaces of the auditorium, fellowship, and nursery areas on the first and second floors of the building. The basement of the addition houses the Church’s youth and childcare programming, and an expanded palette of finishes provides an upbeat and friendly character. By 2021, Eaglemont Church had secured the necessary funding and board approvals to proceed with the addition, and N53 consulted with the Church’s various design approval and technical committees through the design development and construction documentation phases of the project. Construction began in late 2022 and was completed in the spring of 2024.
