Edmonton Public Schools tasked N53 Architecture to re-design four parts of the school: flex spaces / additional classrooms, the general office, the foods / fashion studies area, and the music room.
Five modernized, acoustically separated classrooms with a central Flex Space designed to appeal to the students and allow for variations in how individual and collective users the occupy the space.
For the general office, N53 modernized the interior, introducing spatial demarcation and making apparent the location of the General Office. Focal points include a wood panel entrance bulkhead/ feature wall with integrated signage that leads to a reception desk/ bulkhead/ feature wall that effectively separates the public waiting area from the student services and administration offices behind.
The Foods and Fashion classrooms were increased in area from 2950 SQF to 3670 SQF. N53 added durable stainless steel clad student and teacher cooking stations, modernized mechanical fan/ filtration system, and introduced natural light by way of two large aluminum double-glazed windows.
Finally, the music room was significantly updated. Using acoustic paneling in school hours, N53 created acoustic separations from the music room to adjacent classrooms and corridors, an internal acoustic environment suitable for music performances/ education, and acoustically isolated practice rooms. Additionally, N53 re-designed existing offices and musical instrument storage and cleaning facilities.
