Bow House – a comfortable modern home for a family living in a northern climate. Located in Edmonton, the home is situated on a sloping site and backs onto parkland.
The exterior combines steel panels with the warmth of cedar wood. Minimalist interiors feature a natural palette of white, grey and neutrals, Douglas fir trim, exposed Douglas fir beams and solid pine ceilings, all combining to create a warm and pleasant environment. Expansive windows on the south elevation provide natural light and warmth as well as a view of the forested parkland. Sliding glass doors are used extensively to integrate select interior and exterior areas.
The open concept is an ideal layout for socializing, entertaining and promoting interaction among family members.
The heat source is a high-efficiency boiler/ heated floor slab system. The building envelope is commercial grade with an air/vapour membrane on the exterior face of the plywood sheathing, ensuring an air-tight seal. Insulation is R43 beneath the metal panels and R29 beneath the cedar siding. Windows are operable to permit natural ventilation. Deep roof overhangs shade the windows and eliminate the need for air conditioning during the summer months. The house has achieved an energy rating of 80. Most building components are “off-the-shelf” from Canadian sources.
N53 has achieved a contemporary home that is practical, flexible energy-efficient and will bring years of satisfaction to the home owners.
