ATRIUM SKYLIGHT REPLACEMENT
EDMONTON, ALBERTA
AREA: 2,600 SQF
N53 ARCHITECTURE were engaged by Edmonton Public Schools to assess the existing Centre for Education atrium skylights and provide recommendations for their refurbishment or replacement. The existing skylights had a history of repairs for breakage and leaking over the course of their lifespan. N53 was tasked with providing a solution that was sensitive to the original design and cost conscious given a limited construction budget.
Four options were provided: a veneer system, replacement with another barrel skylight, a knee brace sloped skylight and a clerestory solution. N53 provided extensive 3D digital models and sun-path studies. The clerestory solution was selected as the preferred solution.
The atrium continues to be bright, but without the direct light from the barrel skylight; in addition, the heating and cooling costs have been significantly reduced.
