ABOUT THIS PROJECT

N53 ARCHITECTURE has created a modern home that offers a comfortable living space for a family living in a northern climate. Located in Edmonton, the home is situated on a sloping site and backs onto parkland.

The exterior combines steel panels with the warmth of wood to make a beautiful presence. Minimalist interiors feature a natural palette of white, grey and neutrals. Expansive use of windows on the south-facing side provides natural light and warmth as well as a relaxing view of the forest. Sliding glass doors are used extensively to integrate outdoor and interior entertainment areas.

The bright and open concept creates an ideal layout for socializing and entertaining. The open plan also enables ease of communication and promotes interaction among family members. Architectural lighting and detailing that includes clear-fir trim, exposed Douglas-fir glulams and solid pine ceilings combine to create a warm and comfortable setting.

The heat source is a high-efficiency boiler that heats the floor slabs. The building envelope is commercial grade with an exterior air/vapour membrane on the outside face of the plywood sheathing, ensuring an air-tight seal. Under the metal panels is R43 insulation. Under the cedar siding is R29 insulation. For the other half of the year, the windows can open up, allowing the house to breathe. The deep overhangs shade the windows and eliminate the need for air conditioning during the summer months. The house has achieved an energy rating of 80. Most building components are “off the shelf” from Canadian sources.

N53 has achieved a contemporary, natural, healthy, flexible, practical, comfortable energy-efficient home that will bring years of satisfaction to the home owners.
